The following passage comes from Successful Writing at Work
by Philip C. Kolin (page 85). It contained no errors in its original form; it was altered
for use as both examples.
Original (underlined portions contain errors)
We inspected the tanks at Madisonville and Lacombia for suspected
leakage, and found that both were defective but for different reasons.
The petrolium tank located at Madisonville is in an area that has seen less company
activity over the last few years. It is an old fashioned steel tank that has no protective
coating. The tank clearly showed signs of seepage in the Northeast corner
judging by the contamination of the soil around this area. Moisture around the
tank has corroded the steel casing. The tank at Lacombia, however is in an active
area. It is a relatively new tank, 2 years old, that has a protective coating.
While we detected no problems from spills, or overfills there was leakage at the
pipe joints. We recommend the Madisonville tank be retired, but with further repair
and maintenance the Lacombia tank can be available again.
Revision (underlined portions reflect changes made)
We inspected the tanks at Madisonville and Lacombia for
suspected leakage and found that both were defective, but for different
reasons. The petroleum tank located at Madisonville is in an area that has
seen less company activity over the last few years. It is an old fashioned steel
tank that has no protective coating. The tank clearly showed signs of seepage in
the northeast corner, judging by the contamination of the soil around
this area. Therefore, moisture around the tank has corroded the steel casing.
The tank at Lacombia, however, is in an active area. It is a relatively
new tank (two years old) that has a protective coating. While we detected no
problems from spills or overfills, there was leakage at the pipe joints.
Therefore, we recommend that the Madisonville tank be retired,
and that with further repair and maintenance, the Lacombia tank can be
used again.
